Assignment 8 - Diigo and Portaportal
Part of your requirements for Assignment 8 asks you to share your experiences about creating accounts in Portaportal and Diigo along with your journey of adding a few bookmarks to each site and finally, sharing why you chose one site over the other. I look forward to reading your stories:)

In this week’s assignment, we had the opportunity to work with two different bookmarking sites. The first site I explored was Portaportal.com. When first going to the website, it seems to be a plain site, no photos or anything that might invite you to explore more. Creating an account at this site was very easy (name, email, and password), and the steps to add my websites from the spreadsheet were very easy. I enjoyed working with this site because it made the assignment of entering the information that was already on my spreadsheet into the account. I also enjoyed this website because the look of my information after I was finished was very organized. I feel like Portaportal was a more outdated version of the bookmarking site, but for someone who isn’t used to new technologies it made it easy to navigate and work with.
ReplyDeleteThe second website I explored was Diigo.com. The homepage of this website catches your interest with the animations and facts about what you can do on Diggo. When signing up for an account there are a few options you can choose from, the more you pay the more features you get in your account. The free account (which is the one I chose), does have Ads and you only get 500 bookmarks, and 100 webpage and pdf highlights, unlike all the other options which have no ads and unlimited bookmarks etc. Getting started with entering my spreadsheet information on this site was a little more confusing than Portaportal. Once I got the hang of it however, I became easy. I enjoyed this website but feel like it wasn’t as organized looking as Portaportal was. I got the feeling that Diggo was a more modern version of a bookmarking site, and someone who is comfortable with the internet and how to utilize it would enjoy this site.
When I was going the assignment I had trouble just because I did not like either sites the Diggo or the Poraportal.com. When I decided just due to the fact that it seemed easier for me to establish the information and easier for my audience to see I decided to choose Poraportal.com It was easier technologically for me because all that I had to do was open up a new folder for each subject that I had. For each subject I would just have to create a title, place a url, and then establish a description.
ReplyDeleteFor me my portaportal.com is under the Guest name of SDuelferSOE380. You are able to look at this page if you would like to. My subjects are organized occurring to Art, Language Arts, Math, Reading, and more. I know that neither were easy to get used to but I picked portaportal.com because it would be easier for my audience to recognize the way that it is organized. Also all the audience had to do was click the title and they are able to get to the link that I had chosen. I really hope that you enjoy my site!
I set up both sites and added the same two sites to both pages. To be honest it took a little time to figure it all out how to add pages, links, folders, descriptions and everything else and it took a couple minutes. I wasn’t a fan of either site and I think if they took parts of both sites it would be much better. I liked how the Portaportal was easy to organize in the fact that there were folders and you could break it down a little more. The Portaportal allows you to have folders or portals for different subjects, and then you could organize each portal by adding folders for different grades or the different material that was covered in the site. The big problem that I have with the site is that the adding things and creating folders was a little confusing at first and since I stumbled across it the first time it took a while to figure it all out to add the second site. Adding things to the Diijo site was much easier, but I couldn’t find a way to organize any of it, it just goes into a list and you have to scroll through it all. I ended up going with the Diijo library because it was easier to use, and I didn’t have a bunch of ads flashing around everywhere. I liked the Diijo library and could see myself using this in the future.
ReplyDeleteThis week assignment was a little difficult for me but I was glad that Professor Freeman was available to help me to get an understanding on what I needed to do to complete this assignment. When looking at both bookmarks I choose Portaportal. This site was very easy to create. Once I understood that I had to create my portal and give it a name it went very well. It was easy to make the folders and label them . I liked the fact that it was very easy to edit also without any difficulties.
ReplyDeleteNow as for Diigo it was difficult creating the tabs for me in this book mark. It took me some time to try to figure out how to get started . I was able to start the program for free because it gives you a variety of options according to what type of bookmark you are making. Diigo was not well organize like portaportal that's why I did not choose it. it also was little confusing with it's whole set-up that took some time to get started. I have never use anyone of these bookmarks before but if I have to use one in the future it will definitely be Portaportal.
It took me a while to get the feel for both bookmarking sites, but they are great resources to learn for the future. The Portaportal was at first hard to even begin as I was stuck on portal name. I think I was confusing it for file name as it took me four tries to understand what was being asked. Once I got it, I was able to easily add my two sites. I'm going to have to say that this site is my preferred one as it is neatly organized. Not to say that the other one isn't, but I like how folders can be made to group and organize the sites according to subjects. I feel like it just looks better and more professional than a list.
ReplyDeleteFor the Diigo site, I had no issues inputing the information as it made it easy with the plus icon on the side. The tags were also easy to input and I even selected one with two words to try the tip the professor mentioned with the parenthesis. I preferred the other one over this one because of the way it was organized. I feel like parents would get overwhelmed looking at a list. I'm sure its easy to navigate, but seeing it organized into sections is way better for parents to access.
When using Portaportal.com, I found myself confused a couple different times. I wasn’t sure where to click when I first created my account, because there were large advertisements in the middle of the page. The area to actually create a portal was very small. After I created a portal I was very confused about how to add a bookmark. I was choosing the bookmarklet option instead of the import bookmark files. When adding the websites I had to copy and paste multiple things from my spreadsheet.
ReplyDeleteWhen using Diigo.com, I was able to create my account and add my websites without any confusion. I also only had to copy and paste the URL and the description. The website even named the website for me when I entered the URL. In my opinion, this website was more user friendly. That is why I will be uploading the rest of my websites to this site.
Social Bookmarking:
ReplyDeleteMy experience with both social bookmarking sites as always are a little confusing the first time around. Portaportal was my favorite because it was little easier to navigate. Diigo on the other hand was a little more difficult. There was so much all over the place. Portaportal made me feel more organized, and guided me better.
-Portaportal when I first logged on immediately asked me for my login information, and I knew how to follow the steps right away. I navigated around for a few minutes before I figured how to add a folder. Finally, I clicked on "Add Folder" and the rest guided me through and was pretty much self-explanatory. After each folder you add there is a picture of a plus sign, pencil, and garbage can to do what you want. If you need to add another site, edit your folder, or delete that folder. You would keep doing the same thing for other folders you create. When you create a folder It first asks title, then you click save. There you will then add your sites and put another subtitle and add the URL, and description. This was my favorite social bookmarking site. It was much easier and more organized to navigate.
-Diigo was a little different and I am still not sure If I did that one correct. I did the same thing as portaportal and went ahead to add my login information, but then it takes you to the diggo front page and I had no idea what to do. I seen a plus sign in the corner and just clicked it to see what would happen. It then took me where I can add my sites so I followed the same and typed in the URL and description. I wasn't sure if we were supposed to add anything to the Tags.
Overall, I really liked this assignment. A little time consuming, but it is a great tool to access all of our websites and bookmark all of our information.
The first site that I explored was Diigo.com. I had to become creative in order to understand this site. For me, it wasnt comfortable because I couldn't really tell how was I doing with my work. However, something that did call my attention was that you could add images to your library. Diigo also seems to have advanced features and also it seems to require a little bit more of technological expertise.
ReplyDeleteAfter that, I explored PortaPortal and it seemed more organized to me than Diigo. I could work and have my websites organized and better displayed. When I first logged in I thought this site was going to be difficult to use, whereas there is not too much on the homepage. When I started using the site, it became easier and easier for me.
I chose PortaPortal over Diigo because it was less complicated to use and the display was more understandable and organized.
This week we learned about Social Bookmarking using two different websites, portaportal.com and diigo.com. At first portaportal was very confusing to me. Making an account was really easy and the directions were very simple, but after creating an account and logging in I was very confused what to do after. I created a portal, but I was stuck as to what t do next. After a few minutes of navigating I seen that you could add files into the portal and after that it was a breeze to use. I did have to simplify my description, but other than that I enjoyed using portaportal.
ReplyDeleteDiigo was very easy to create an account. It was really straight forward and I made an account within minutes, but adding bookmarks was very confusing. I had a really hard time as to figure out how to do that. I know on the assignment said that we had to create tabs, but I wasn't finding at how to create a tab. After a little bit of searching and exploring the site I figured it out. But still I had issues with creating it. My URL wouldn't stay in the space that was for the URL and my description wouldn't stay neither. I tried copying and pasting and it won't stay. I also tried typing everything out and it won't stay. I did not like Diigo due to all the issues.
I chose to use portaportal. It was simple to use after I got the hang of it. It took less time to get a hang of portaportal than it did with diigo. I would reccomned portaportal to other people.
The Portaportal website was easy to create but I had a hard time setting up the bookmarks. I thought I did it correct but I could not find the bookmarks. I think it has a good concept for creating links for bookmarks but it will not allow certain characters and words. This is where I got confused. I truly did not understand how to submit information. It seemed simple at first, but it would not allow me to add anything else. I did not like this site.
ReplyDeleteI chose the Diigo we site, I thought this would be a challenging site. I figured it out and was able to add information. It took me some time to learn how to tag. I like this website because it is basically ad free. I was able add bookmarks with tags, it took some time to do that but I believe I did it the proper way. I like this website better than Portaportal.
For this weeks assignment we read about and created accounts for two different bookmarking sites. The two sites we utilized were Portaportal.com and Diigo.com.
ReplyDeleteTo start, I created a Portaportal account. The creating of an account was pretty easy. The basics of creating an account were asked email, name, username, password, etc... it was after that was pretty confusing. There was a button on the top right hand corner that said "Add Portal" but it wasn't very specific or detailed when you made it to the next step. The site seemed to be outdated, I'm no "Tech Expert" but I can navigate a site pretty easily and I could not get the hang of this one. I would have liked a more intuitive site to make this assignment as simple as it should have been.
The next account I created was Diigo account, it was fantastic! Diigo was super easy to navigate. You start at the homepage, create and account with the basics name, email, username, and password. After creating an account I clicked on "My Library" because it seemed like the next best option and then I found the "+" sign on the top right hand corner, I clicked and the first thing I was able to add was a bookmark, exactly what I needed! Adding a bookmark could not have been made more simple, you add the URL, title, descriptions, tags and voila, you've got a bookmark! I feel Diigo was much more user friendly and intuitive especially for folks who struggle with technology.

Trying to configure which site to use was a little frustrating at FIRST. Because i started with Portaportal where as i created an account in that went smooth, then it brought up different little boxes with add ,clone etc. I couldn't configure this out. Every time i tried to add a bookmark it didn't work or accept the file content it stated. Therefore, it was a little harder using this website creation because I am no guru or anything but I am very handy in love to use computers. I was just so lost and tried many ways.
ReplyDeleteHowever, the next account i created what Diigo in which was simple to create to create in then verify the account with acknowledgment within your email you used. Consequently, once i verified the site it took me to a page explaining getting started with small little boxes to click on whereas the proevious site used did not. Then i clicked on the blue button Add. It then asked me to add the bookmark,PDF,photo,text. SO i clicked on add bookmark it prompted to type in URL . I copied what was in my bookmark folder in it added it to the library. I navigated the site a little bit more to see if what i was doing was right in yes it much easier but sometimes i like a challenge.
